After bossing the game on Day 1 in Ahmedabad, India started at 99/3 on Thursday, just 13 runs behind England. With Rohit Sharma and vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane in the middle, the fans were expecting India to take a mammoth lead in the first innings. However, things changed dramatically for India in the first hour of Day 2 as they were left reeling at 125/8.

India collapse from 114/3 to 125/8

Team India have suffered a few major batting collapses in past. However, it doesn’t really happen when India play at home in their favorable conditions. This is the why the fans were completely left perplexed by what they saw at Narendra Modi Stadium on Thursday.

After India got off to a steady start on Day 2, the misery started when vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane (7 off 25) was adjudged LBW off Jack Leach. The left-arm spinner then dismissed a well-set Rohit Sharma (66 off 96) in his next over. After that, skipper Joe Root showed his magic with the ball. He destroyed India’s lower middle-order with his off-spin, dismissing Rishabh Pant (1), Washington Sundar (0) and Axar Patel (0). The hosts lost 5 wickets inside 11 runs, with the score shockingly reading 125/8.

India did manage to add some crucial runs towards the end through vital contributions from Ravichandran Ashwin (17 off 32) and Ishant Sharma (10 off 20). However, the star of the show was Captain Joe Root (5/8), who took a sensational five wicket-haul. India were eventually bundled out on 145, ending the first innings with a 33-run lead.
