Often called ‘Turbanator’, Harbhajan Singh is one of the finest spinners India ever produced. He picked up a total of 711 wickets across all the formats in international cricket until 2016.
After not getting picked up by the Indian team, he was a part of the Indian Premier League until 2021, and soon announced his retirement from international cricket. Since then, he has been serving as a commentator for the Star Sports Hindi commentary panel. His remarks and views during the matches have been closely listened to by the viewers as well.
In the recent stint as a commentator during the ongoing RR vs RCB game in IPL 2022, Harbhajan commented, “Umpiring mei maza nahi aa raha,” taking a jibe at the level of the umpiring in this season during the first half of the Rajasthan Royals innings.
In one instance, an umpire judged Jos Buttler out for an LBW appeal in the 15th over of the innings, but on a DRS referral had to overturn the decision. To this, Harbhajan added, “IPL should only have skilled umpires. I am not at all happy with umpiring.”
Although all the umpires have sufficient experience in international cricket as well as domestic and global leagues, there have been several contentious decisions in the ongoing tournament. Consequently, the umpires are receiving backlash from the commentators. The former CSK player has been trending on Twitter after thrashing the umpires in a consistent manner for their decisions.
The fans are quick to pounce on the comments made by Bhajji, and are demanding the BCCI to make Harbhajan the umpire to judge his decision-making in the Indian Premier League.
