In the AL Central match between Cleveland Guardians and Detroit Tigers, the former’s baseman David Fry got struck in the face by a 99 MPH delivery from Tigers’ ace Tarik Skubal. The hit impacted Fry as he collapsed instantly and covered his face. Trainers rushed into the scene to tackle the injured baseman. Tarik also looked upset at the moment and the game was halted. After getting struck by the blow, Fry stood and was taken towards the medical cart with trainers. He was also assisted with a towel pressed to his face. The tumultuous scene drew audible gasps from the Progressive Field crowd.
Fry left the game for evaluation but Cleveland didn’t lose hope and grabbed the momentum. Pinch-hitter George Valera struck out but the Guardians capitalised on a series of opportunities, which included bunts, defensive miscues, and a wild pitch. Cleveland racked up five runs in the inning to grab the lead. The triumph has promoted Guardians on the points table as they are currently at the top of the tally with 85 wins and 72 losses.
David Fry received medical aid
David Fry was taken to Lutheran Medical Center for further evaluation. The extent of his injury is yet to be known. Guardians haven’t issued any statement regarding Fry’s injury. However, Skubal, whose delivery hurt Fry, looked shaken and tense after the incident. “My first thought was for David’s health—nothing else mattered in that moment.”
Cleveland’s next match is against the Detroit Tigers on September 25. Tigers will look to emerge victorious in the upcoming contest and claim the top position, while Guardians will endeavour to get the better of Detroit and maintain their position on the summit spot.
