Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on Saturday announced Faf du Plessis as their new skipper for the 2022 edition of the IPL. Prathmesh Mishra, CEO of the Bangalore franchise, announced the South African cricketer as the new captain for the fresh edition. The announcement was followed by players like Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers wishing Faf “good luck” for his responsibilities with the franchise through a video.

In the RCB Unbox event at Church Street in Bangaluru, fans came in large numbers to attend the event which also saw the team’s new-look jersey being launched. Dinesh Karthik, Harshal Patel, Shahbaz Ahmed, Luvnith Sisodia and Aneeshwar Gautam joined the RCB Unbox event.

While the RCB franchise notified about Faf being the new skipper of the side by posting an update on their official Twitter handle soon after the same was announced at the event, an old tweet of RCB’s former owner Vijay Mallya resurfaced.

It was in the comment section of this post that many fans used Mallya’s old tweet to take a jibe at the team which is yet to win its maiden title. Several users reshared Mallya’s old tweet reading, “Great, but win the trophy.” Notably, Mallya’s old tweet is from the year 2020, when RCB revealed their new logo on 15h February and posted about the same on Twitter. In reply, Mallya commented on the post by writing, “Great, but win the trophy.”

Notably, RCB is one of the rare franchises in IPL that is yet to lift the title, even after participating in the cash-rich league tournament from the start. Fugitive businessman Vijay Mallya bought the Bangalore franchise for a whopping USD 111.6 million in 2008. Mallya had been chairman and non-executive director until he resigned from his post on February 25, 2016. As of now, United Spirits are the owners of Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Under the leadership of Faf, RCB will kick start their IPL campaign against Punjab Kings at the DY Patil Stadium on March 27. After PBKS, RCB will lock horns with Kolkata Knight Riders at the same venue before locking horns with Rajasthan Royals which then will give way to a blockbuster clash with five-time IPL winners Mumbai Indians on April 9.
