Differentiating fact from fiction can be very tricky in the age of social media. While there are so many chunks of information flowing all over the internet, not everything one consumes is true. Leave aside the less aware but even 2011 Cricket World Cup-winning cricketer Virender Sehwag has become a victim of believing the fake to be true.

A similar incident happened on Saturday. The former India opener shared a tweet on social media congratulating Hima Das for winning a gold medal in the 400 metres race at the Commonwealth Games 2022. However, once he realised he had spread the wrong information, he was quick to delete the tweet,

Several screenshots of his tweet, however, have surfaced on social media.

Take a look:

This is not the first time Sehwag has shared a fake piece of information on social media. The most extensively reported was the image he used to pay his tribute to Galwan valley martyrs.

While the news of Das winning the medal was not true, India are off the mark in the medals tally with Sanket Sargar clinching a silver medal in the Men’s 55 kg weightlifting. The 21-year-old successfully lifted a total of 248 kg and came second by a margin of just 1 kilogram with Malaysia’s Aniq Mohammad clinching the gold.

Olympic medallists Mirabai Chanu and Lovlina Borgohain will be in action later today on what promises to be an exciting day for the Indian contingent.
