Over the years, MS Dhoni has been known to be a cool customer on the field. His calm presence and temperament have won many matches for the Indian team as well as the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the IPL. The skill to excel in pressure situations with his decisions as a leader and finishing games with the bat, helped him to earn the nickname of ‘Captain Cool’.

However, there have been some occasions when Dhoni has lost his cool due to the player’s performances, the decision by the on-field umpires, and vent his anger toward them. This article covers 5 such incidents in the IPL.

The incident transpired in the fixture between Chennai Super Kings and Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) in the 18th Match of the 2019 edition of the IPL. CSK posted 160 on the board and put a brake on the opposition batters by their clinical performance with the ball. With the Kings needing 39 off 12 balls, Deepak Chahar came to bowl his fourth over.

In his first ball, he delivered a no-ball and was smashed for a boundary. The pacer followed it up with another no-ball which cost the team another two runs. This forced Dhoni to come to him at the bowling marker and scolded him for his irresponsible bowling. In the video, it can be clearly seen that Chahar tried to explain the rationale behind the error but admitted his mistake in the end. In the subsequent balls, he was impressive and took a prized scalp of David Miller, and the team went on to win the game by 22 runs.

2. No-ball controversy vs RR in IPL 2019

In a thrilling fixture between Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2019, the world witnessed the angriest side of MS Dhoni. After the Royals posted 151, captain cool scored 58 off 43 balls but was dismissed in the last over of the game, and the team still needed 8 off 3 balls. The bowler Ben Stokes delivered a doubtful slower full toss to Mitchell Santner, who took a double and the umpire at the bowlers initially signalled it as a no-ball but refrained after the leg-umpire deemed it as a legal ball.

After seeing all this action, Dhoni arrived on the field and argued with both the umpires and forced them to send the decision upstairs. The umpires refused, and the game continued. The Kiwi all-rounder won the match for CSK with a double, wide, and six on the subsequent balls.

3. Dhoni roars after playing a watch winning knock vs KXIP

This game secured the playoffs spot for CSK, and then went on to win their maiden IPL title as well. They needed 16 off the last over, and the duo of MS Dhoni and Albie Morkel were the batters. Dhoni finished the game in a matter of four balls, with four, two, and two big sixes. After hitting a winning six, the CSK captain was pumped up and was seen yelling at himself and hitting his helmet as well off his gloves. franchise pays so much money

In the post-match presentation, Dhoni termed it as an emotional moment and reckoned that the franchisee pays so much money and the team should at least reach the semi-finals.

4. Another controversy with umpires

Another controversial decision incident happened in the 18th over of Match 4 of IPL 2022 between CSK and RR. In the fifth ball of Deepak Chahar’s over, Tom Curran tried to slog a good-length ball, but it brushed off his pads and was deemed to be caught by Dhoni. The Englishman Curran was shocked by the decision, but could not review, it because there were none left. However, both the umpires decided to send the decision upstairs to get a confirmation of contact with the bat.

The ultra-edge did not show any spike and it was also witnessed that the ball bounced just before Dhoni tried to attempt a catch and the decision was overturned. This irked Dhoni and he seemed unhappy and had a long chat with the umpires.

5. Dhoni miffed at Bravo in IPL 2021

In Match 30 of IPL 2021 between CSK and MI, Dhoni lost his cool and was involved in confusion with the all-rounder Dwayne Bravo. In the 18th over of the second innings, Saurabh Tiwary tried to hit a scoop shot off Deepak Chahar, but gave a catching opportunity at the short fine-leg position. From the video, it can be clearly seen that Dhoni ran and called for taking a catch, but Bravo was already in a position to collect it, and this confusion meant the catch was dropped. Thereafter, captain cool was furious and hurled angry words at the all-rounder.
