Spanish tennis player Alejandro Davidovich Fokina suffered one of the most controversial exits from Wimbledon 2022 after facing a second-round defeat to Czech player Jiri Vesely. Although Fokina was trailing in the match on most occasions, the way he lost it was one of the most bizarre ways of losing a tennis match.

The Spaniard was penalized by the net umpire in the tie breaker of the fifth set which eventually turned out to be the match-deciding point. Davidovich Fokina was trailing 8-7 in the fifth set tie-breaker. He then conceded a point and the difference now became 9-7. With a loss around the corner, Fokina looked completely frustrated and angry. He tried venting it out on the tennis ball.

An angry Davidovich Fokina then hit a ball in anger out of the court before he started to prepare to face double match points. But before he could serve, he was informed that he has already lost the match as he was penalized a point by umpire Carlos Ramos for his action. So, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina was knocked out of Wimbledon 2022 after Jiri Vesley defeated him 6-3, 5-7, 6-7(2), 6-3, 7-6(7) in the second round.

Having seen the incident, commentators were stunned. “I don’t agree with it. That’s crazy… what a lousy way to end it,” US tennis great John McEnroe told ESPN.

Notably, Davidovich Fokina had been cited for a different code violation earlier. When the umpire made the match-ending call, Davidovich Fokina questioned the ruling, saying his two citations were for different infractions. Two such violations during one match result in a point being awarded to the opponent.

Davidovich Fokina would be disappointed after losing the game in such a fashion. He had defeated No.7 seed Hubert Hurkacz in five sets in his first-round match. Meanwhile, Vesely moves on to face 30th-seeded Tommy Paul of the United States in the third round.
