The ongoing season of Laliga Santander keeps getting more and more dramatic as it enters the business end of the season. After Atletico Madrid and Barcelona played out a goalless draw at Camp Nou, the onus was on Real Madrid, who had an opportunity to go top of the points table with a win against Sevilla. With the score levelled at 1-1 at Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano, it looked like Zinedine Zidane's side will register a victory when they were awarded a penalty in the 74th minute after Karim Benzema was brought down in the penalty box. But, neither the fans nor the players would have ever imagined what was about to happen next.

Unbelievable series of events in Madrid

The crazy series of events started when Sevilla got a corner, which was well defended by Real Madrid. The ball fell to Karim Benzema who launched a counter-attack with the opponent's defenders out of position. The Madrid striker was fouled by the goalkeeper and the referee pointed at the spot. However, what followed afterwards was a bizarre sequence of events that have never been seen on the football field. The referee was asked by VAR officials to go check the TV screen for an earlier handball by Real Madrid's defender Eder Militao.

At that time, the fans were left completely confused as for the first time in LaLiga, both the teams were in with a chance to get a penalty. With the game and title race so evenly poised, the pressure was on the referee to take a huge decision. While Benzema was ready to take the penalty kick, the referee in fact surprised everyone and awarded the penalty to Sevilla instead, which was converted by former Barcelona mid-fielder Ivan Rakitic.

Real Madrid unhappy with referee's decision

While the match ended in a 2-2 draw after Madrid's late equalizer, the referee's controversial decision certainly did not please Los Blancos' manager and players. Zinedine Zidane was seen talking to the officials after the match while Toni Kroos also looked utterly disappointed. After the match, Marco Asensio too vented out his frustration as he said that this kind of penalty could actually cost them the title.
