Notably, Messi won the prestigious award for the first time in 2009, and also in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2019. Messi edged Robert Lewandowski and Jorginho who completed the top three. Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo missed out on a top-five place for the first time in 2010. The Argentine forward scored 38 goals in 48 appearances for Barcelona. He won the Copa del Rey for the Spanish club. The 34-year-old superstar also led Argentina to a historic Copa America win in July.

“It’s incredible to be here again,” Messi said at the award night held at Paris’s Theatre du Chatelet.

“Two years ago I thought it was the last time. People were starting to ask me when I was going to retire. But now I’m here in Paris and very happy,” he added.

“A large part of this trophy is because of what we did in the Copa America. So thanks to my teammates, this is also yours. My wife, my children, my father, my mother are here,” Messi expressed his gratitude to all his teammates as well as his family in the acceptance speech.

With this, the PSG forward has won two more Ballon d’ Or’s than his rival, Cristiano Ronaldo. The Manchester United striker came sixth this year in the voting carried out by a jury of journalists from all over the world.
