Favourites to win a gold medal by a country mile, Mirabai Chanu did no harm to her reputation in the 49 kg Women's weightlifting event at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham. While she lifted 88 kgs in the snatch round to take a massive 12-kg lead, her first attempt of 109 kg in the clean and jerk was enough to ensure a gold for India.

However, she bettered it with a lift of 113 kg in her second attempt to consolidate her top position. Her efforts ensured that the Indian national anthem was played for first time in the 2022 edition of the games as the Indian tricolour was elevated the highest. In a moment that gave goosebumps to every Indian present at the venue and those who watched live, the champion daughter of India was seen getting a bit emotional before she put on her familiar smile.

This was India's third medal of the day with the other two medals also coming in weightlifting. While Sanket Sargar had started off the proceedings with a silver medal, Gururaja Poojary clinched a bronze. As far as Mirabai is concerned, she had won the gold the previous time and was coming on the back of a silver in Tokyo 2020 which meant lots of expectations coming into the Commonwealth Games.
