The Netherlands pulled off an incredible win in a five-game thriller against Portugal in the group stage game of the Women’s Euros. The Dutch were up 2-0 up in the first 20 minutes thanks to goals by Damaris Egurrola and Stefanie van der Gragt. But minutes before half-time, Portugal pulled one back as Diana Silva is fouled in the box and Carole Costa slotted in the penalty.
Then after the break, in the space of two minutes as Os Navegadores levelled the score as Diana Silva headed in the ball with a from Costa’s cross. With a levelled score, both teams were neck and a neck. But this deadlock lasted until the 62nd minute as Oranje midfielder Danielle van de Donk scored an absolute screamer to give the Dutch an important lead. Lieke Martens was dribbling up the ball towards the goal from the left flank and passed the ball toward Van de Donk who smashed with a postage stamp finish with a magical curl.

After the game, Van de Donk talked about the team’s incredible effort, She said, “That was very hard. Fair play to Portugal, they did the best they could […] But I think we kind of helped them get back into the game, which was our own fault. I almost never score goals like [my winner]. Normally, I only score tap-ins. I know where the ball’s going, and I tap it in. For this one, I don’t know what was happening!”
The Netherlands coach, Mark Parsons also was elated with the performance and said, “It’s been a big couple of days. We lost four players before this game. We keep getting punched in the face, and we keep coming back stronger. We showed great character to come back. We scored an important goal and the defence was very solid.”
