Indian weightlifter Sanket Mahadev Sargar has opened India's medal account in the Commonwealth Games 2022. The 21-year-old Indian weightlifter represented India in the 55 kg category and lifted a total of 248 kg to win the silver in Birmingham on Saturday.

Sanket Mahadev Sargar confidently began his CWG 2022 campaign as he made three clean attempts of 107kg, 111kg and 113kg in the snatch lifting. Later, he went on to lift 135 kg in clean and jerk lifting to take the lead in the competition with a total of 248 kg.

During his second clean and jerk attempt of 139 kg, Sanket suffered a dreadful elbow injury which affected his third attempt of 139 kg. After failing to lift the weight in his last two attempts, Sanket had a chance to win the gold but Aniq Kasdan of Malaysia took the gold with a total lift of 249kg.

Aniq Kasdan lifted 107 kg in snatch in his first attempt and failed to lift in his second two attempts. In clean and jerk lifting, Kasdan registered a clean lift of 142 kg in his final attempt to clinch the gold by 1 kg difference.
