India’s lifter Sanket Mahadev Sargar opened the account for India at the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2022 as the 21-year-old won the silver medal in the final of the Men’s 55kg weightlifting. He finished behind Aniq Mohammad of Malaysia who pipped him by just one kilo to claim the gold medal. Meanwhile, Sri Lankan lifter Dilanka Isuru Yodage won the bronze medal.

Although Sanket did a brilliant job to win the silver medal, he would rue missing a chance to win a gold medal. It could have been a top finish for the Indian lifter had Sanket not injured his right elbow in the second attempt of the Clean & Jerk round. The Indian failed to lift 139kg in his second attempt in C&J Round as he failed to stand till the buzzer came out. In the process, he also dislocated his elbow.

It seemed Sanket Mahadev Sargar will not be able to go for the third attempt. However, the 21-year-old displayed immense courage to come for the third attempt after receiving some treatment from the physio. But it did not augur well for the Indian as he only aggravated his injury. Sanket could not even hold for a second in the jerk and dropped the bar. He also looked in a lot of pain when he returned to the change room.

Sanket does well!

The 21-year-old Indian lifter did pretty well in the Snatch round as he successfully lifted 113kg and finished way ahead of his opponents (leading by 6kg to head into the C&J round). His first attempt in the C&J round also went really well as Sanket Mahadev Sargar successfully lifted 135kg. This gave him a clear edge having lifted 248 kg (113kg + 135kg) overall. The Indian tried to extend his lead as he added 4kg to his barbell. But unfortunate for him that he could not lift it.
