West Indies and South Africa are all set to battle it out in the first of two Test matches beginning Thursday at the Darren Sammy Cricket Stadium, St Lucia. It will be quite an interesting encounter to look out for since the teams haven’t met each other since the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019. In their last Test series at home, the Caribbean side looked prepared and willing to bat deep into the innings, something which they struggled to achieve in their previous assignments.
There is little doubt that Kraigg Braithwaite along with Kieran Powell at the top of the order will be the key men for them in this series while Jason Holder along with a promising Rahkeem Cornwall provide a lot of balance to the side with their ability to contribute both with the bat and ball.
As far as South Africa are concerned, they will be led by Dean Elgar, who has quietly built a reputation of being one of the better opening batsmen around the world in recent times in this format. Along with the likes of Temba Bavuma and Quinton de Kock, they also have a formidable batting line up.
In their bowling unit, Kagiso Rabada will be the key even though numbers suggest that his recent form hasn’t been that threatening. Moreover, watch out for Keshav Maharaj who can not only impact the match with his bowling but even score some useful runs lower down the order.
At the outset, the series is likely to be a hard-fought one and both teams have the resources to complete a win.
It would be a tricky one to predict the Probable XI for both the teams. However, among the wicketkeepers, Quinton de Kock is a massive favourite to assure the gamer some points not only with his glovework but even with the bat. Among the batters, make sure to pick Dean Elgar and Kraigg Brathwaite who have both proven themselves in this format. Rassie van der Dussen, Temba Bavuma and Aiden Markram are Proteas options to be considered. From the West Indies, Kieran Powell is an experienced option and can be a useful bet apart from the all-round option of Jason Holder and Kyle Mayers . Among the bowlers, Kagiso Rabada, Keshav Maharaj, Kemar Roach, Anrich Nortje can all be impactful with Maharaj even capable of scoring a few runs. Consider Rahkeem Cornwall as well who can also contribute with the bat and change the course of the match.
