What are MS Dhoni’s captaincy record in international cricket?

MS Dhoni who is fondly called as captain cool by his fans and followers had a stellar record as captain in international cricket. MS Dhoni had a long span of career around 9 years to captain the team in all 3 formats. Even now Dhoni remains to be the only captain to win 3 different ICC events as captain. From showing his skill in pressure situations and Indian teams domination in 2007/8 – 2011 WC would always be considered as great period for the Indian team.

332: MS Dhoni has captained Team India in 332 international games which is most for any player.

1: MS Dhoni became the first captain to win an ODI series final against Australia in Australia during 2008. This happened during CB 2008 Tri-Series.

Note :- India won Benson & Hedges World Championship 1985 final against Pakistan in Australia soil.

4: MS Dhoni is the only Indian captain to start his Test career with 4 wins in his first 4 Test matches as captain in 2008.

40: In the 40 year history, MS Dhoni became the first Indian captain to win a Test series against New Zealand in New Zealand during 2009. Last captain before Dhoni to win a Test Series against Kiwi’s in New Zealand was Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi in 1968.

1: India have played 7 Test series against South Africa in South Africa and lost 6 of them. The only series which India managed to draw against Proteas in South Africa was in 2010. Only Test win for Team India in Durban ground came during the year 2010.

1: India won ICC Test Championship race during the year 2010 and 2011 under Dhoni’s captaincy.

14: MS Dhoni has won 14 matches in World Cup as captain, which is most for an Indian player and joint-most with the 1992 WC winning captain Imran Khan. Only matches Dhoni lost as captain in World Cup was against South Africa in WC 2011 and against Australia in WC 2015 semi-final. Dhoni’s success percentage in WC stands at 85.29%.

42: MS Dhoni has won 42 T20I matches as captain which remains to be joint-most till now. Currently Asghar Afghan has won 42 T20I games out of 52 matches that he played as captain.

200: During 2018 Asia Cup MS Dhoni got the opportunity to captain the side for one last time when Rohit Sharma rested himself. He became only the 3rd player to captain 200 ODI games after Ricky Ponting and Stephen Fleming. Interestingly his first game as captain was against Pakistan in World T20 2007 which ended in tie and his last game as captain was also tie against Afghanistan in Asia Cup 2018.

20: MS Dhoni is the only captain to win 20 matches in T20 WC as captain. The next best as captain is 11 wins by Darren Sammy and Graeme Smith in T20 WC.
