2020 Tokyo Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra earned an automatic qualification for his maiden World Championship final on Friday morning by clocking a qualification mark in the very first attempt. India's star javelin thrower threw the spear to a distance of 88.39m to secure his place in the summit clash.
Neeraj Chopra is participating in his second World Athletics Championship and aiming to become only second Indian athlete after Anju Bobby George to bag a medal at this level. Notably, participants who have cleared 83.50m or 12 best performers across two qualification round groups qualify for the final.
Earlier, Neeraj Chopra recorded a throw of 82.6m, but failed to qualify for the final at the 2017 World Championship in London. Later, Neeraj Chopra was forced to sit out due to elbow surgery. The Olympic medalist was pitted in Group A of qualifying for the men's javelin.
