The 1st ODI between India and West Indies on Sunday saw the Men in Blue produce a dominant all-round performance in Ahmedabad. After Yuzvendra Chahal and Co. bowled brilliantly to bowl out the visitors on 176, the batters completed the job in some style as India hunted down the target in only 28 overs, with 6 wickets in hand.

Rohit Sharma scored a brilliant half-century before Suryakumar Yadav (34* off 36) and Deepak Hooda (26* off 32) joined hands to see the home side through with a solid partnership. After the match, SKY opened up on what the duo was discussing during their batting.

“Things were really clear, he (Hooda) has played a lot of domestic cricket, so he knew the situation really well. So we were having little conversations and setting little goals (in our partnership). His confidence was spot on though,” SKY said.

The 31-year-old also admitted that he is really enjoying his time in the nets and his performance on Sunday certainly showed that he is quite confident. There isn’t much that can affect SKY at the crease, even if it’s a sledge by Kieron Pollard.

There were moments when the two MI players were caught talking to each other in the second innings and after the match, Suryakumar revealed what was being said by the West Indies captain during the chatter.

“Pollard told me a few things. ‘Midwicket was open, why are you not flicking like you do in IPL’ but it was different here,” SKY said with a smile on his face. He added, “I wanted to remain not out. It was difficult for the bowlers to grip the ball due to the dew. It was a little slower in the afternoon, but it became easier for the batters with the dew settling in.”

It was indeed a fun banter between two friends who will once again turn up for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2022 this season. However, they will remain as rivals for now as India get set to play against West Indies in 2nd ODI on February 9, Wednesday.
