The Main Event of the UFC Fight Night San Diego saw the clash of two of the finest Bantamweights. The much-anticipated bout didn’t disappoint as it went the distance where Chito Vera delivered a highlight reel kick to knock out the star Bantamweight fighter Dominick Cruz.
Vera with a record of 20-7-1 has now won four consecutive fights as he has defeated Rob Font, Frankie Edgar and Davey Grant before this fight. He is now on the verge of a title shot. He had a slow start but found success in Round 1 with a left hook that floored Cruz. The former UFC bantamweight champion had a better performance in Round 2 but was dropped by Vera in the third round.
Chito Vera continued his domination over Cruz with a combination of punches and then finished the fight with a nasty head kick. Cruz tried regaining his balance but his nose was noticeably damaged as referee Herb Dean helped him to his feet. Vera became the first bantamweight with 10 finishes in UFC history. Cruz dropped to 24-4 professionally.
"Hey, San Diego. All the respect to your boy [Cruz]. I'm a professional. Thank you everybody for showing up. I'm f---ing packing out arenas today, huh?" Vera said during his post-fight interview. 'I'm going to keep kicking ass. Ecuador, I'm going to be a world champion."
The main event was the only big star attraction in the whole fight card. However fights like Nate Landwehr vs David Onama, Yazmin Jauregui vs Iasmin Lucindo and Gerald Meerschaert vs Bruno Silva also created some memorable moments.
The co-main event was a real roller coaster ride. A really close fight ended via Majority Decision in favour of Nate Landwehr. Gerald Meerschaert took down Bruno Silva and registered a massive win in the Middleweight Division. He now has the second most wins after Anderson ‘Spider’ Silva in the UFC Middleweight Division.
