The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) team management had shown immense faith in two young Indian talents while announcing their retention list. Meanwhile, the other two retentions saw two experienced campaigners getting a nod. The same strategy was reflected in KKR's bidding at the mega auction. They had entered the auction hall with 48 crores in their purse.

KKR were hunting for a captain, an opener, and a gun fast bowler straightaway. As they had three all-rounders already in their setup, KKR management did not bid that aggressively for such players. However, they went all corners to get Shreyas Iyer in their hut and bought him for a whopping 12.25 Crores. Apart from Iyer, KKR spent big on getting back Nitish Rana and Pat Cummins. While they got Cumiins for 9.25 Crores, Rana was bought for 8 Crores.

KKR looked strangled with their strategy on Day 2 as well as they bought two batters in the form of Ajinkya Rahane and Rinku Singh.
