Star Indian batter and veteran of the sport, Cheteshwar Pujara on Sunday, August 24 announced retirement from all formats of game. The 37-year-old, who has been out of the scheme of things from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), took to social media to go out loud to announce his decision to put down curtains on his international cricketing career.
“ Wearing the Indian jersey, singing the anthem, and trying my best each time I stepped on the field - it’s impossible to put into words what it truly meant. But as they say, all good things must come to an end, and with immense gratitude I have decided to retire from all forms of Indian cricket . Thank you for all the love and support! ������ ” he captioned the post on X.
Cheteshwar Pujara retires from international cricket
In his post on X, the Saurashtra cricketer went down the memory lane, recalling his old days from where it all began. The Rajkot-born also went on to extend his gratitude to everyone who has been part of his cricketing journey thus far, writing, “I would like to thank the BCCI and the Saurashtra Cricket Association for the opportunity and support through my cricket career. Am equally grateful to all the teams, franchises and counties I have been able to represent over the years.”
While he supported his retirement with an elaborate note addressing everyone, from his family to support staff, teammates, and others, he also hinted to focus on the next phase of his life. “I look forward to the next phase of my life, spending more time with and prioritizing them,” he concluded.
The 37-year-old retires having amassed 7195 runs from 103 Test matches including 19 hundreds and 35 fifty-plus scores, averaging 43.60. In five ODIs he featured in the Indian colours, Pujara could only amass 51 runs at the strike rate of 39.23.
