South Africa’s young batting sensation Dewald Brevis has broken into record books as the costliest player in the SA20 League auctions. This year, Brevis has been stunning in the shortest format of the sport. In the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, when he got a chance to play for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) as an injury replacement for Gurjapneet Singh, he looked extraordinary with his bat and grabbed attention. Playing 15 matches, the right-handed batter notched up 225 runs at a stellar strike rate of 180.00. He continued his excellent batting form against Australia in the three-match T20I series played Down Under in August.

Brevis' recent performances made him a favourite to bag a lucrative deal in the SA20 League 2025 auction and as per expectations, he attracted some franchises at the business event. His name launched a bidding battle among four teams: Pretoria Capitals, MI Cape Town, Joburg Super Kings, and Paarl Royals. Eventually, Capitals looked stubborn and succeeded in inducting the 22-year-old in their team for the upcoming T20 event after splurging INR 8.31 Crore.

Sourav Ganguly expressed joy on adding Dewald Brevis to Pretoria Capitals

Ex-India captain Sourav Ganguly, who will be seen as head coach of Pretoria Capitals in SA20 2025-26, looked elated after acquiring Dewald Brevis. Ganguly showed faith in the youngster’s talent and hoped for the right-handed batter to do well for Pretoria.

"We’re very happy, I think he's a very good player. Obviously, 16.5 million is the other way of looking at it, but just in terms of quality on our pitch, our ground, Pretoria, I hope he does well. We haven't thought so far yet (on making him captain in future). He's a tremendous talent, his game has really gone forward in the last 1 and a half years as you saw against Australia in Australia recently. He's a game changer, and that's what you need in T20 cricket," remarked the 53-year-old.
