Pacer Harshit Rana’s selection in Team India for the ongoing white-ball series in Australia has drawn criticism from former players and ardent fans. World Cup 1983 champion K Srikkanth became vocal against Rana and also went on to accuse India head coach Gautam Gambhir of backing the speedster despite his underwhelming performances Amidst these developments, Rana looked miserable with the ball in the initial two ODIs following which his critics didn’t relent against him and Gambhir.

Rana’s childhood coach Sharavan has disclosed that noting the pacer’s disheartening numbers in the first two ODIs, Gautam Gambhir rebuked the youngster. “He called me and told me that he wanted to shut the outside noise with his performance. I just said, believe in yourself. I know some cricketers say he is close to Gambhir. But Gambhir knows how to identify talent, and he backs them. He has backed a lot of cricketers, and they have done wonders for their team. He in fact scolded Harshit badly. He told him directly, ‘perform kar, warna bahar bitha dunga.’ He sends a clear message to whoever you are,” remarked Shravan.

In the final ODI played in Sydney, India were playing for pride against the Aussie team and Rana showcased his brilliant side with the ball. The 23-year-old registered 4/39 figures in his 8.4-over spell and played a vital role in India’s nine-wicket win.

Following the ODI series, India will be locking horns against Australia in the five-match T20I competition to be played from October 29. If Harshit gets the opportunity in the playing XI, he will have to prove himself with impactful numbers. As the T20 World Cup 2026 is only a few months away, Harshit will look to be disciplined to win a spot in the team for the marquee tournament.
