Captaincy was at its best in the league stage of IPL 2026 with many teams being forced to make dramatic decisions to navigate their teams from tricky positions. While some like the title holders Royal Challengers Bengaluru handled themselves well, former title holders like Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants struggled under confusing circumstances. IPL 2026: Rating the captaincy of all team leaders is the perfect indicator of how captains were able to influence the outcome of games in the league. Some captains transformed average squads into strong contenders for the playoffs, while others lacked momentum in handling various situations. The playoffs begin next week on May 26, which means that we have a definite report card on captaincy.

The competition was concluded with the top three on the standings locked at 18 points, with only the Net Run Rate separating them. These teams were Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Gujarat Titans, and Sunrisers Hyderabad. The Rajasthan Royals snatched the last playoff spot on the very last day. On the other hand, Punjab Kings just missed out on qualification while CSK, MI, and LSG had tough seasons.

1. Rajat Patidar - Royal Challengers Bengaluru

RCB captain Rajat Patidar made the best leader's pitch in the entire IPL 2026 series. RCB ended up as the team that topped the table, raking in 18 points with a positive net run rate of +0.783. Patidar notched up an impressive 393 runs at a strike rate of 183. This despite the fact that he handled pressure superbly, as evidenced by his excellent bowling rotations all season long.

2. Shubman Gill - Gujarat Titans

Consistency and good strategy was employed by Gujarat Titans skipper Shubman Gill. The Gujarat team won their way back into form after suffering defeat in the first two matches and managed to finish second in the tournament with a total of 18 points. Gill was instrumental in scoring 616 runs with an average of 47.38 and had created the best opening partnership with Sai Sudharsan. His handling of Kagiso Rabada and the bowling attack drew praise through the season.

3. Pat Cummins - Sunrisers Hyderabad

Once again, Sunrisers Hyderabad skipper Pat Cummins proved why he is considered to be one of the best strategists in the game of cricket. SRH managed to clinch the third spot on the points table, earning a total of 18 points by mounting a recovery from their sluggish start. It was clear that their bold approach with the bat continued through the whole tournament, as they registered an emphatic victory against RCB in the last match of the league stage.

4. Shreyas Iyer - Punjab Kings

In spite of not making it to the playoffs, the Captain of Punjab Kings, Shreyas Iyer, had an excellent captaincy year for his team. The PBKS finished at number five with 15 points following their disastrous six consecutive losses. Iyer made 498 runs with an average of over 55 and strike rate of 169. However, Punjab failed to recover after losing momentum midway through the season.

5. Riyan Parag - Rajasthan Royals

The captain of Rajasthan Royals, Riyan Parag, led RR into the playoffs despite being under immense pressure. Rajasthan won the match against Mumbai Indians and qualified for the playoffs with 16 points, ranking fourth on the table. Despite struggling with his own batting performances, he managed to play with composure while making some audacious calls during bowling situations.

6. Axar Patel - Delhi Capitals

The Delhi Capitals skipper, Axar Patel, was solid in the defence throughout their inconsistent season. DC managed to stay in the hunt for a playoff spot till the last minute and ended up with 14 points in total. Axar’s bowling figures of 6.14 revealed his disciplined approach. It was his strategic bowling in the middle overs that did wonders for him initially.

7. Ajinkya Rahane - Kolkata Knight Riders

Ajinkya Rahane, the captain of Kolkata Knight Riders, had a tough season with his team ending up in seventh place with 13 points. The problem that their team faced was poor leadership and reactive strategies against teams who were scoring at high rates. Rahane made 335 runs at an attack rate of 135, but KKR failed to adapt quickly enough to modern attacking trends despite a late recovery.

8. Ruturaj Gaikwad - Chennai Super Kings

Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad struggled to keep CSK consistent during a difficult transition season. The franchise finished eighth with 12 points after several costly defeats in tight matches. Gaikwad found it difficult to recreate CSK’s traditional control-based approach, especially in pressure situations. Defensive bowling plans often lacked impact, while tactical experiments during the middle overs backfired at crucial stages, leaving the five-time champions outside the playoff race.

9. Hardik Pandya - Mumbai Indians

Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya faced another difficult campaign as MI finished near the bottom with only eight points. Frequent batting-order changes and inconsistent bowling plans hurt the team badly. Mumbai repeatedly failed in close matches. Despite flashes from players like Ryan Rickelton, the side lacked balance and direction throughout the tournament.

10. Rishabh Pant - Lucknow Super Giants

Rishabh Pant, who was the captain of Lucknow Super Giants for the year 2026, had the worst season compared to other captains participating in the 2026 Indian Premier League season. Lucknow Super Giants ended up in the last position in the points table with just four victories out of 14 matches played in the league. They failed miserably in forming a consistent bowling attack along with their batsmen who consistently crumbled under pressure during each match.
