Former Team India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL) on August 27. With this decision, Ashwin ended his illustrious 17-year career. In 2009, Ashwin started his journey with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and after 17 years, he concluded his voyage with The Yellow Army. This year, he returned to Super Kings after 10 years but failed to be as effective as he used to be earlier. The 38-year-old announced his retirement from IPL but in his social media post, he stated that he will explore various leagues.
Ex-India opener Aakash Chopra believes if Ashwin discovers his options in foreign leagues, the latter will get picked easily. “Wherever he puts his name, he is going to get picked, and he will do very well. Indian players aren’t allowed to play in the other leagues to save the novelty of the IPL. If you have to go and play elsewhere, you have to retire not just from international cricket, but also from the IPL, and that's a slightly big caveat. You can go and play somewhere else only if you say tata bye-bye to IPL money,” said Chopra on his YouTube channel.
Ravichandran Ashwin’s IPL achievements
Ravichandran Ashwin served five teams during his IPL career. With CSK, he won the 2010 and 2011 editions of IPL. In 2011, when Super Kings defended the title successfully, the off-spinner chipped in with 20 wickets in 16 matches at a frugal economy of 6.15. In the final against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), he registered 3/16 figures in his four-over spell and played an instrumental role in CSK’s convincing 58-run win.
After 2015, he played for Rising Pune Supergiants, Punjab Kings (PBKS), Delhi Capitals (DC) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) but his best performance came with Chennai. In 2025, he made a comeback in Chennai, but took only seven wickets in nine matches at a miserable economy of 9.12.
