Former England top-order batter Jonathan Trott has become the head coach of ILT20 team Gulf Giants ahead of the upcoming season. Giants’ 2024-25 campaign was disappointing as they failed to qualify for the playoffs after ending their round-robin stage in fifth place on the points table. This was Gulf’s worst season in the league and noting underwhelming performance. Trott will replace Andy Flower in the set-up. The former English player, who is the head coach of Afghanistan, was recently axed from the same role in the SA20 League team Pretoria Capitals.
A day after the development in the Pretoria camp, positive news emerged for Trott as Gulf hired him for the upcoming season of the ILT20 League. As Giants’ coach, he will be expected to get the best out of players to help the side replicate their first season’s performance and lift the trophy. Following his appointment, Trott said, “The Gulf Giants have quickly established themselves as one of ILT20’s most competitive sides. I aim to empower players, build a strong environment, and shape a title-winning squad through the first-ever ILT20 auction.”
Shane Bond will serve Gulf Giants as bowling coach
Trott will get assistance from ex-New Zealand fast-bowler Shane Bond, who will be the bowling coach of Giants. Bond possesses immense experience in coaching as he has served quality T20 sides such as the Indian Premier League (IPL) teams Mumbai Indians (MI), Rajasthan Royals (RR), and the SA20 League side Paarl Royals.
Bond also gave a statement following his contract with Gulf. The Kiwi legend divulged his intention to consolidate Giants’ bowling attack. “The team’s intent is clear. I look forward to strengthening the bowling unit and making a decisive impact this season.” remarked Bond. The New Zealander will fill former West Indies bowler Ottis Gibson's shoes in Gulf's camp.
