Kolkata hit by massive earthquake ahead of India vs West Indies match at T20 World Cup 2026

An earthquake of 5.5 magnitude hit Bangladesh on Friday, and its tremors were felt in Kolkata and nearby districts of West Bengal. According to the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre, the earthquake happened at a depth of around 35 km below the ground. In Kolkata, the tremors lasted only a few seconds. However, many people felt scared and quickly stepped out of their homes and offices as a safety measure.

Notably, India is scheduled to play an important match of the T20 World Cup 2026 against them on Sunday, 1 March, at Eden Gardens Kolkata. This panic has also raised questions about whether the match will happen at the decided venue or not.

Currently, the whole city is in panic mode, and people are scared even in their homes due to this massive earthquake. If the situation is not brought under control within the next two days, there is a strong possibility that the match may not take place at the scheduled venue.

This is a very important match for both teams, as the scheduled game is one type of quarterfinal for India and the West Indies. South Africa has already qualified for the semi-finals from Group A by defeating India and the West Indies in their first two matches. Now the winner of the India vs. West Indies match will get the last semifinal spot from Group 1.
