Former Team India skipper Sourav Ganguly is all set to start his new innings in cricket as he has been appointed the new head coach of SA20 League’s team Pretoria Capitals. He will replace former England batter Jonathan Trott in the role. Pretoria is a sister team of the Indian Premier League (IPL) side Delhi Capitals (DC). Ganguly has been associated with DC for the last few years. Earlier, he donned the role of mentor while last year, he was made JSW's Director of Cricket. After getting the new responsibility, India legend will now be seen in the upcoming SA20 League 2025-26 auction to be held on September 9, 2025.
Pretoria Capitals, through their Instagram handle on August 24, announced the latest development. “The Prince is all set to bring a royal flair to the Capitals camp! We are ecstatic to announce Sourav Ganguly as our new Head Coach. The Centurion awaits,” read Capitals’ social media post with Ganguly's pictures.
Pretoria Capitals’ journey in SA20 league
Pretoria Capitals looked extraordinary in the opening season (2022-23) of the SA20 league. Under the leadership of erstwhile captain Wayne Parnell and the-then coach Graham Ford, Capitals topped the round-robin stage with seven wins in 10 outings. However, they failed to hold their nerves in the final against Sunrisers Eastern Cape and faced a four-wicket defeat which kept them away from the trophy.
In the last two seasons, they couldn’t deliver impactful results to their supporters and concluded their campaigns in the fifth spot. The upcoming season will start on December 26 and Pretoria will play their maiden game against Joburg Super Kings in Centurion. Before entering the season, Sourav Ganguly will endeavour to buy quality players for the side in the auction to help Pretoria script history by winning the title. Ganguly will be supported by former South Africa skipper Shaun Pollock, who will serve the team as assistant coach.
