On Friday, October 17, the Sri Lanka women’s team is taking on South Africa Women in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. While the two teams are coming off contrasting results, the co-hosts will be hoping to get their maiden win to their name. For the unversed, Sri Lanka Women won the toss and elected to bat first.
While her decision came seeing overcast conditions prevalent in Sri Lanka, the co-hosts were handed a massive blow early in their innings. Coming out to bat, skipper Chamari Athapaththu was joined by Vishmi Gunaratne in the middle, as Sri Lanka posted 14 after four overs.

The incident took place in the fifth over, which was bowled by Marizanne Kapp. After being smashed for a four on the first ball, Vishmi knocked the fullish delivery to mid-on on the fourth ball of the over. While she went for a single, before reaching the non-striker’s end, the ball hit her left knee, leading to her fall. Although, she looked in pain, the physio ran out to attend her and eventually was carried off the field.
She was declared retired hurt with Hasini Perera replacing her on the field. After being retired hurt, Vishmi can still come out to bat if she is fine later in the innings, but at the moment Sri Lankan scorecard reads 46/2 with skipper Chamari Athapaththu and Hasini Perera back in the dugout.
