Josh Inglis produced a moment of magic at the Gabba as he ran out England captain Ben Stokes. England were in control at 4-210 in the third session, Stokes pushed a ball to the off-side and called Joe Root through for an audacious single. However, Root sent his captain back after he was halfway down the pitch, giving Inglis one stump to aim at and he picked the ball up with one hand and threw down the stumps before being mobbed by teammates.

Stokes had to depart for a gritty 19 off 49 balls and it proved to be a decisive moment in the game as Jamie Smith followed soon after for a duck as England slumped to 6-211 after losing two wickets for just one run in the space of four balls. Joe Root was also visibly disappointed but there was no run in it and it was Stokes call.

Earlier in the day England won the toss and opted to bat first and found themselves in tricky position losing Duckett and Pope with just 5 runs on the board. Crawley scored a half century and Joe Root steadied the ship for England. Just as Stokes and Root were building a partnership this freakish run out from Josh Inglis further put Australia in front on Day 1.

Mark Howard summed up the chaotic turn of events in commentary. Howard said on Fox Cricket “That’s the one the Aussies wanted the England captain departs and Inglis is into the action”

Josh Inglis who is in the side for this match is a wicket-keeper and David Warner pointed this out in commentary that this is what made the run out even more special. “He would not have practised this too often being a wicket-keeper, that’s Jonty Rhodes-like” Warner said.
