England bowler Brydon Carse was handcuffed by police after being involved in a night-club incident in Derby on Sunday. In a video doing rounds on social media, Carse was spotted being led away in handcuffs. Per reports, the English pacer joined his Durham teammates for celebrations after the side recorded a 338-run County Championship victory over Derbyshire. In the video shared by The Telegraph, Carse could be seen talking to his Durham teammate Matthew Potts.
Not only this, but former England captain Ben Stokes, who played a key role in guiding the side to a win, was also spotted in the video. Sources suggest that Carse was briefly detained but was not arrested. He was subsequently released and returned to the Durham team hotel. In addition, it remains unclear as to what led to police intervention, and there has been no official confirmation about whether Carse was involved in any altercation. Moreover, the 31-year-old is a part of England’s squad for the second Pakistan Test, is due to meet up with the squad on Monday, and was not on England duty at the time of the incident.
ECB Launches Investigation on Brydon Carse’s Nightclub Incident
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has launched an investigation around the Brydon Carse controversy. "We are aware of an incident which is reported to have taken place in Derby last night, and are currently investigating,” a statement from ECB read. "We will provide a further update when possible,” it added. Notably, the incident occurred five days after English Test skipper Joe Root scrapped the midnight curfew that was imposed in January.
Earlier, during the start of his second reign as Test captain, Root had urged his players to be "really good role models and human beings.” He told BBC Sports, "You always want to represent your country in the best possible light.” "We might have fallen short of that on a few occasions in the recent past. The only thing we can do to rectify that is be really good role models, good human beings and put in really strong performances on the field,” he added.
Notably, the English team has been facing a tumultuous summer after the infamous Ben Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson controversy during England’s series against New Zealand where they suffered a 2-1 series. It was followed by Ben Stokes announcing his retirement from international cricket.
