The England and Wales Cricket Board has taken a massive decision by dropping the England captain Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson ahead of their 2nd test match against New Zealand. Their protocol violation regarding the midnight curfew breach hasn’t been taken lightly by the board. The move to drop the England skipper could be a huge indication regarding the importance of discipline in their squad and we could even see the worst possible end for his career. Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson might have just played their last match for England in the game against New Zealand in the first match of the series.
With the second Test scheduled to begin on June 17, the ECB confirmed that both players are under active investigation regarding their conduct. The decision to drop Ben Stokes wouldn’t exactly be unprecedented by the experts and the fans due to his recent indisciplinary actions. Joe Root has been called up as the interim captain for the side in the second test match of the series and we could see the board looking to hand over the captaincy to a younger player in the future.

England face internal turmoil as Root appointed as interim captain
The England skipper Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson would be in deep agony regarding the timing of their actions and the repercussions for their actions. England were firmly in control over the series after their dominant victory at Lord’s in the first game of the series. The players were given some down-time and clearly the duo has made the worst out of the opportunity. The ECB has historically maintained a strict policy regarding player conduct during active series. The future of both the players in the squad would be subject to immense scrutiny and as of now, no definite actions have been taken regarding their place in the squad.

The return of Joe Root as captain would be another tactical dilemma that the squad will be facing in the second game. Root will be captaining the side in their “Bazball” era and there will be a significant distinction between his style of captaincy and Ben Stokes’ aggressive approach. It will be a difficult task for Joe Root to get his mindset adjusted to the modern style of cricket they are playing and we could even see them returning to the traditional approach. However, the approach could be criticised by the experts and pundits.
England are undergoing some intense internal issues and they will be hoping that the performance of the team wouldn’t be affected in the second match of the series. Having taken the lead in the first match of the series, they will be looking to deliver the final blow against the Kiwis. Under the captaincy of Joe Root, England will be hoping to keep their standard of play high and secure the series win against a tough New Zealand side.
