There’s announcing a squad for an important overseas assignment and then there’s unveiling a side that immediately gets fans talking. And when the team in question happens to be Pakistan, a side known for unpredictability, flair and raw cricketing brilliance, then every squad announcement begins attracting attention of a different kind altogether. Pakistan have now announced their ODI squad for the upcoming Australia series and there are quite a few developments that have already begun making headlines. Some big names have returned, some fresh faces have earned opportunities and a few notable stars continue to remain away owing to injuries.
The major talking point remains the appointment of Salman Ali Agha as the vice-captain of the ODI side. A cricketer who has quietly contributed with consistency and composure, Salman’s elevation in leadership reflects the confidence the management now places in him.

Then come the returning stars. Babar Azam is back in the ODI squad alongside Haris Rauf, Naseem Shah, Shadab Khan and the exciting young spinner Sufiyan Muqeem.
And truth be told, these are not merely names returning on paper. These are match-winners capable of changing the complexion of contests altogether.

Babar’s class and authority (remember he’s not been in the best of forms, of lately) with the bat, Haris’ aggression with pace and Naseem’s sharpness with the new ball significantly strengthen Pakistan ahead of what promises to be a challenging Australia tour.
At the same time, the selectors have also ensured opportunities for fresh talent. Ahmed Daniyal, Arafat Minhas and Rohail Nazir have all received ODI call-ups, reflecting Pakistan’s continued investment in youth and future planning.
Interestingly, Rohail Nazir joins Muhammad Ghazi Ghori as one of the wicketkeeper-batters in the squad, giving Pakistan multiple options behind the stumps.
But while there are exciting inclusions, there are notable absences too. Usman Khan was not considered owing to illness, while Fakhar Zaman and Saim Ayub continue their rehabilitation programs because of injuries.
Pakistan would certainly hope to have both left handers back soon given the explosiveness they bring at the top of the order. Tours to Australia have never been easy.
Conditions test temperament, technique and resilience.
But with experience returning and fresh talent stepping in, this Pakistan ODI squad certainly carries intrigue, promise and perhaps the potential to surprise.
