Indian captain Shubman Gill won plenty of praise on social media platform X after playing a composed 80-run knock in the first ODI against England at Edgbaston on Tuesday. The Indian skipper held the innings together after the early dismissals of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, helping India take control of the 259-run chase with a mature display of batting. India's chase got off to the worst possible start as Rohit fell for 11 before Virat Kohli was trapped lbw for just five. Gill played positively and put on a partnership with Shreyas Iyer.
The right-hander brought up his half-century in confident fashion before shifting gears as India edged closer to the target. Just when he looked set to convert this into another ODI hundred, Gill was forced to retire hurt on 80 after suffering from cramps, ending an impressive stay at the crease. Let us look at how twitter reacted to this knock from the Indian captain.
Gill's innings quickly became one of the biggest talking points on X, with fans applauding the maturity and responsibility he showed in difficult circumstances. Many described it as a captain's knock, praising the way he absorbed the pressure before taking the attack to the England bowlers. Several users also highlighted Gill's incredible consistency in ODI cricket. Fans pointed out his impressive run in recent innings, while others celebrated the fact that he now averages around 60 in the format with a strike rate of over 100, underlining his growing stature as one of the world's premier white-ball batters.
While most reactions focused on his match-defining innings, many supporters were left disappointed after seeing Gill walk off the field with cramps. Fans felt he was well on course for a deserved century and rued the fact that the injury denied him a special milestone. A number of users also noted that Gill missed the opportunity to become the first Indian captain to score an ODI century against England in England.

That was a sublime innings from Gill. I don't necessarily think England bowled as well as they should have v him. But to play the way he did on a deck with a hint of variable bounce/holding up a touch was a connoisseur's delight. pic.twitter.com/JlilmbfpCD

Axar Patel stars as India cruise the chase against England
Once Gill had to go out, India lost the wicket of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer quickly. However Axar Patel and Washington Sundar built a partnership to lead India close to victory. Axar Patel scored a half century and his all-round brilliance helped India in the chase.
Shubman Gill's retirement did not affect the result as India completed the chase comfortably. However, his innings remained the defining performance of the contest, with social media celebrating the composure, confidence and leadership he displayed under pressure.
