Sri Lanka suffered another setback on Day 4 of the first Test against India as Dinesh Chandimal was ruled out of the match after being diagnosed with concussion. His replacement, debutant Pasindu Sooriyabandara replaced him and had a Test debut to forget after being dismissed from the very first ball he faced. Chandimal was injured while fielding during India's second innings. The veteran batter chased a shot towards deep square leg and put in a full-length dive to save runs. He managed to stop the ball but landed awkwardly on his right shoulder and neck. Sri Lankan medical team attended to him before Chandimal walked off the field. A precautionary scan showed no internal injury, but he later underwent a concussion assessment.

The team doctor and physiotherapist subsequently ruled him out for the remainder of the Test. Sooriyabandara was brought in as Chandimal's concussion substitute after being approved by the match referee. The 26-year-old has an impressive first-class average of more than 54 and had already caught the eye in the field after taking a fine diving catch to dismiss Ravindra Jadeja.
Sooriyabandara gets dismissed for Golden duck on Test debut
Sooriyabandara's first innings with the bat lasted just one delivery as he was dismissed by Suthar. He walked in after Mohammed Siraj dismissed Nishan Madushka early in Sri Lanka's chase of 372. He faced Manav Suthar and was struck on the pad by the spinner's first delivery. The initial lbw appeal was turned down, but India opted for a review. Replays showed the ball would have hit the stumps, and the decision was overturned. Sooriyabandara was out for a golden duck, meaning his first Test innings ended after just one ball.
Sri Lanka finished the day on 84/4 and still need 288 runs to win the match. Dhananjaya de Silva was unbeaten on 31, while first-innings centurion Sonal Dinusha was 25 not out. India had earlier been dismissed for 193 in their second innings and set Sri Lanka a target of 372. Rishabh Pant's 66 was the main contribution for India. Sri Lanka now face a huge task on the final day with six wickets in hand and a long way still to go. The visitors will be hoping that rain stays aways and they get a full day at Galle.
