Cricket South Africa had announced their contracted squads for the 2026-27 season, with Corbin Bosch and Dewald being granted contracts for the first time. The list consists of 18 men’s and 15 women’s contracts, and a men’s hybrid contract was awarded to Simon Harmer. They have also announced a list of 20 men’s Players of National Interest known as PONIs, who have been domestically contracted.

Big Names Dropped as CSA Signals Transition and Backs Emerging Talent

Some interesting calls have been made by the South African cricketing board as certain notable names, such as David Miller, Rassie Van der Dussen, Nandre Burger, and Gerald Coetzee, have been dropped from the list. Last season, David Miller was on a hybrid contract, as he had the opportunity to discuss with the board regarding his availability in international matches so that he could give priority to franchise leagues as well in between tours. Miller was part of the squad in the most recent ICC T20 World Cup, and it didn’t seem like it was his last. But with no contractual agreement between the CSA and David Miller, the retirement of the batter could be just around the corner.

Rassie Van der Dussen has been an impressive player for the Proteas across years, as he has some good numbers in both white-ball and red-ball cricket, but he hasn’t been included in the contracted list. Nandre Burger, Gerald Coetzee, and Lizaad Williams have been unavailable for a long time with injury concerns, but they have made their way back into the squad, and still, the CSA has decided not to include them in the list. Anrich Nortje is also one of the pacers who isn’t included in the contracted list, as he himself had opted out a couple of years ago, citing stress fractures influencing his availability for the longer formats. They will be looking to explore more options with the young talent that they possess in the domestic circuit, and they may be facing a period of transition.

Consistency in Women’s Core, Vision for Depth Defines CSA Approach

"With a busy and significant season ahead for both the men and women, it remains important that we continue building depth and strengthening our pipeline with PONIs, while remaining competitive at the highest level. We believe these groups give us a strong base to do that; Our Road to 2027 and Beyond strategy also informed the final choice of players who possess the level of talent and attitude required in achieving our strong ambitions of winning all major ICC events going forward." Patrick Moroney, CSA's selection convener, said in a statement. They are giving importance to those players who are fit and available throughout this period of play. South Africa could have one of their busiest cricketing years in quite a while this time, so it is important to have a pool of players who can be match-ready for most of the period.

In women’s cricket, South Africa has retained most of their core players, with some players yet to prove their worth for the contract. The women’s side will be prioritising the T20 World Cup, which is set to commence this June. An unexpected call would be the exclusion of Kayla Reyneyke, as she has been constantly performing under pressure for her side. She recently won the Player of the Match award in her ODI debut against the New Zealand side, and she has even received two Player of the Match awards in the 4 T20Is she has played in her career so far. The only new name among the women in the contracted list would be Meso, who is an interesting prospect to look out for.
