Rob Key, managing director of England men’s cricket team, denied the label of ‘national embarrassment’ for England men’s test team following the ‘night club controversy’ involving Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson. Key stated that while he was much frustrated after the incident came to light but calling the side such names are far too strong.
Rob also stated that although he has been defending the national team, he has not ruled out sacking Ben Stokes as captain after the incident in a Chelsea nightclub. He also pointed out that Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum remain one of England's most successful leadership partnerships irrespective of the current ongoings.

"No, I don't think they've become a national embarrassment," he said. "I think that Stokes and McCullum are two of the most successful coach and captain partnerships we've had.
"I feel disappointed that I'm here talking about this, because there's so much we've tried to learn from. And I believe that, as a team, the way that they've carried themselves in the lead-up to this game, the way they've played that Test match, everything that we spent so long working on… the breathing space you felt, and the relief when we won that Test match, that was so important too because the noise would have got incredibly loud had we not won that Test match. To then be now talking about this, not even a day later, is just incredibly frustrating." Rob Key added.
This was not the first time Stokes got involved in such an incident. Earlier in 2017, following England's ODI victory against the West Indies, Ben Stokes and teammate Alex Hales were involved in a late-night street brawl outside the Mbargo nightclub in Bristol. Stokes was even arrested and removed from the vice-captain role.
Ben Stokes dropped after controversy, Joe Root returns as Test Captain
Following England’s first Test victory over New Zealand at Lord's, Stokes and Atkinson broke the team's newly implemented midnight curfew. They went to the Rex Rooms nightclub in Chelsea, where a brawl took place in the early hours of Monday morning involving a Saracens academy rugby player. Reports indicate that the players were neither the primary aggressors nor hurt. However, an ECB security officer who intervened required stitches. Since the incident came to light, the ECB has put Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson under scrutiny.
Both Stokes and Atkinson have been ruled out for selection for the second Test at The Kia Oval. Joe Root has been appointed as the interim England Test team captain. Rob Key stated that the investigation is still ongoing and that any decision regarding Stokes' future as captain will be made official once a conclusion is reached. Admitting that the players have currently lost the trust of the public, he also revealed he is seriously considering a complete alcohol ban for the team moving forward.
England will lock horns with New Zealand for the second test on Wednesday, 17 June 2026, at The Kia Oval in London.
