Delhi Capitals fans erupted into the chants of ‘49’ as the team surpassed the unwanted record mark in their clash against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Both teams were up against each other in the 39th clash of the IPL 2026 season at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in the capital city of India. The Capitals, who had played a record-setting knock in their previous game against the Punjab Kings, were hoping for a similar start. However, the RCB bowling unit led by Josh Hazlewood and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, got off to a destructive start.
The Capitals surely set a record, but a forgettable one of recording the lowest powerplay score in the history of the tournament. Within four overs, the Capitals were at 8-6, and at one point it seemed like they would surpass RCB’s record. Notably, the defending champions own the record of lowest ever team total in an IPL game with just 49 runs. Hence, during Monday’s game, when wickets kept falling one after the other for the Capitals, it seemed that we might get a new lowest total.
However, that didn’t happen and the team got bundled out at 75. But, during the game, when the Capitals crossed the 49-run mark, fans couldn’t hold themselves back and the entire stadium echoed with the chants of ‘49, 49’. The videos of the same have been widely circulated on social media since then.
RCB skipper Rajat Patidar credits bowlers for lopsided win over DC
As the defending champions recorded a lopsided nine-wicket win over their counterparts, skipper Rajat Patidar credited the bowlers for the same. He said, “I think even I am surprised the way wicket played and all credit goes to bowlers, the way they have bowled, especially in the powerplay, Hazlewood and Bhuvi. I think the way they have, you know, hit those areas and got that a bit of swing earlier, I think that was tremendous to see.”
He also spoke on the RCB’s winning streak and said, “It's very important to follow your routines because you know it's still a long way to go, but I think we are just taking one game at a time. And the positive is, as I mentioned last game also, that different players coming up and doing it for the team, I think that's a good sign for us.”
Notably, this was RCB’s second straight and sixth win of the season.
