Afghanistan all-rounder Gulbadin Naib, who is currently an active international cricketer and part of Afghanistan’s T20 World Cup squad, has made a strong statement backing Virat Kohli’s longevity in world cricket. Naib believes that the former India captain should not only play the 2027 ODI World Cup but could even extend his career to feature in the 2031 Cricket World Cup.
Sharing his thoughts on Kohli’s future, Naib stated, “He should definitely play, in fact, he should also play in the 2031 ODI World Cup.” The comment has quickly gained traction among cricket fans, sparking debate around Kohli’s fitness, form, and ability to continue at the highest level for years to come. On 9th February, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced annual contracts for the players and have kept Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in Grade B.
Gulbadin Naib’s opinion carries weight, given that he himself continues to play international cricket at the top level. The Afghanistan all-rounder remains a key figure in his national side and is actively competing in major ICC tournaments. His endorsement reflects the respect Virat Kohli commands not just in India, but across the global cricketing community.
Virat Kohli, widely regarded as one of the greatest batsmen in the history of the game, has consistently set new benchmarks in international cricket. Even after stepping away from T20 Internationals, Kohli remains a central figure in India’s ODI setup. His hunger for runs, unmatched consistency, and elite fitness levels continue to keep him among the world’s best.
By the time the 2027 ODI World Cup arrives, Kohli will be in his late 30s, an age where many players start considering retirement. However, modern-day cricket has seen several elite athletes extend their careers well beyond traditional limits, and Kohli’s disciplined fitness regime places him firmly in that category. A potential appearance in the 2031 World Cupwould be unprecedented, but not entirely unrealistic given his physical conditioning and mental strength.
Naib’s remarks have resonated strongly with fans, many of whom believe Kohli’s experience and calm presence in pressure situations remain invaluable to Team India. His role as a senior figure and mentor could prove just as important as his runs in future tournaments.
As discussions around Virat Kohli’s future continue, Gulbadin Naib’s backing adds an interesting international perspective. Whether Kohli plays in 2027, 2031, or both, one thing remains clear — the cricketing world is not ready to see the end of Virat Kohli anytime soon
