Mohammed Shami’s absence from the international stage has sparked widespread speculations regarding his comeback. The 35-year-old speedster, known for his pace, swing, and ability to deliver under pressure, has been a cornerstone of India’s bowling attack for over a decade. However, recurring fitness concerns have plagued his recent career, leading to his omission from key tours. Even after claiming nine wickets in his last appeared tournament, ICC Champions Trophy 2025 Shami was overlooked for the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy and the Asia Cup this year.

However, Mohammed Shami reportedly reveals that it was his own reservations about his physical condition that played a pivotal role in his exclusion. Speaking at an interview Shami stated, “Same thing happened before the Australia tour as well. Before the tour, I had discomfort. I am a believer in the thought process that if you are not at the level the team wants you to be, you should take a step back.” While opening up about his exclusion, Shami addressed the BCCI selection committee with a reported candid message. “I have neither blamed anyone nor complained that the selectors should or shouldn’t talk to me. I don’t care about it that much. If I fit into your plans, then select me in the team. If I don’t, then don’t pick me. I have no objections. You fulfill your duties and do what’s best for the nation. I believe that if you give me an opportunity, I will try to do my best,” he stated.

Mohammed Shami last Test appearance was WTC final 2023 against Australia

With over 400 wickets across formats, including 229 in Tests at an average of 27.71, Mohammed Shami has the ability to move the ball both ways, combined with his relentless accuracy, has troubled some of the world’s best batters. However, at this stage of his career, fitness reportedly remains the biggest hurdle. Shami’s last Test appearance was way back in 2023, when India faced Australia in the World Test Championship 2023 at The Oval. In his last appearance of Indian team, he had a prolific outing with the ball in the ICC Champions Trophy where he finished as India’s joint highest wicket taker with Varun Chakravarthy, both the bowlers took nine wickets.

While speaking about his comeback, Mohammed Shami said, “I am working hard. If I can play the Duleep Trophy, I can certainly play T20Is, Selection is not in my hands. I am ready to play in all formats. If I can play for five days in the Duleep Trophy, there shouldn't be any discussion about whether I can play international cricket.” The BCCI selection committee, under Ajit Agarkar’s leadership, with the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and emerging talents like Akash Deep and Arshdeep Singh stepping up, reportedly sidelined Shami in order to balance experience with youth as the it is said that team transitions into a new era of cricket.
