Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to deliver a massive cricket announcement during his upcoming visit to Australia. He is expected to formally declare that the season opener match from Australia’s Big Bash League will be played in India for the first time in the history of BBL. In his visit to Australia, Prime Minister Modi is set to announce this news and make it official.

 

Chennai to host BBL match

Chennai is set to host this landmark fixture and the opening match of the upcoming season of the BBL will be played in Chennai. The move signals a new era where overseas leagues are looking at India as a potential market. This also shows how far India and Australia relations in cricket has come.  

Big Bash League has a huge fan following in India and the organizers want to play the opening match of the season in India and see how it pans out. This news came out a few months back and although there is no official confirmation yet we can soon expect the announcement.

If this becomes a success, going forward other overseas leagues also will look to host a few matches in India given the craze for cricket in the country. The MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai was selected as the venue for this historic match. The 2026/2027 BBL is set to take place during December and the schedule is yet to be released. It will be interesting to see which two teams will play in the opening game that is scheduled to be played in India.
