If you talk about the last three Indian Premier League seasons, in particular, and in the context of none other than MS Dhoni, then something interesting comes out and with glaring observation for die hard cricket fans.
It’s that in each of the last 3 seasons, there had been growing concerns on the availability of MS Dhoni as to whether he would or would not in fact play in the noted league. But breaking conventional thinking and hearsay, ‘Mahi’ did after all feature in each of the bygone three seasons.
He furthered his presence and worked on his fitness to be available for his doting Chennai side.
But as a new season is about to undergo - the key question on Dhoni is- for how much longer? How long can we expect MSD to be around the team and in the tournament which endeared him further to the cricket loving fan.
Apparently, one of his good friends and former CSK teammate, Robin Uthappa seems to have an avid answer.
Former Chennai Super Kings batter Robin Uthappa believes the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League could be the final one for legendary captain MS Dhoni. The IPL 2026 season is set to begin on March 28, with Dhoni expected to feature for CSK once again. However, Uthappa feels the veteran wicketkeeper-batter could take on a reduced role this year as he prepares to eventually step away from the game.
Speaking on Star Sports, Uthappa suggested that Dhoni may focus more on mentoring the team while continuing to play.
“I think this could be his last year. I see him playing more of a mentor-cum-player role this season and taking on a smaller role with the bat. I don’t see him batting at No.7; he might even bat at No.8 knowing he is on his way out,” Uthappa said.

Uthappa also shared his views on current CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad. He believes the young skipper should be given more time to establish himself as a leader.

According to Uthappa, Gaikwad is still leading the team while emerging from Dhoni’s shadow, which can be challenging for any captain.
He added that Gaikwad would truly be able to show his leadership qualities once he gets the opportunity to lead the side independently without Dhoni in the lineup.
