He is surely one of the most powerful and distinct figures in the world of global cricketing governance. He is also one of the most dynamic faces to have emerged in the upper global tiers of the sport’s governance, giving credence to India’s salient role as a cricketing superpower. When he speaks, the sport takes notice. And he is none other than Jay Shah, the International Cricket Council chief.

Jay Shah recently spoke about long-term planning for Indian cricket and the importance of continuity in administration after his move to the International Cricket Council from the Board of Control for Cricket in India. During an interaction reported by CNBC, Shah revealed that when he was working with the BCCI, preparations had already been planned up to the 2028 Olympic cycle. His focus was on building a structured roadmap so Indian cricket could align with the growing global expansion of the sport, especially with cricket returning to the Olympics at the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. However, Shah emphasized that his transition to the ICC means the responsibility now lies with the current BCCI leadership.

He urged administrators, officials, and stakeholders within Indian cricket to continue the long-term vision rather than focusing only on short-term goals.

According to Shah, planning in modern sport must extend well beyond a single tournament or Olympic cycle.

He encouraged officials to start thinking ahead toward 2030 and the 2032 Summer Olympics, ensuring that India continues to develop players, infrastructure, and systems that can sustain success on the global stage.

He also hinted at an even bigger long-term objective — the potential preparations linked to the 2036 Summer Olympics, an event India has shown strong interest in hosting.

Jay Shah also stressed that such ambitions require early groundwork, cooperation between administrators, and consistent planning over many years.
