Former Australian batter Justin Langer has emerged as the leading contender to become England's next head coach replacing Brendon McCullum. As per various reports, Justin Langer is understood to be at the top of the England and Wales Cricket Board's (ECB) shortlist. However, it remains to be seen how his commitments with the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the Manchester Super Giants in The Hundred. As per sources, there are strong indications that Langer could part ways with LSG and discussions with the ECB will unfold in the coming days.

After Brendon McCullum was sacked as the head coach, former Zimbabwe player Andy Flower was approached by the ECB for this role. However, Flower turned down the opportunity. This means that Justin Langer has become the top priority for the ECB.

 

Justin Langer took over as Lucknow Super Giants head coach in 2023. He also coaches Manchester Super Giants in The Hundred. If approached by the ECB, he will have to decide whether to accept the England role and leave his franchise commitments, remain exclusively in franchise cricket, or attempt to balance both responsibilities. 

Ravi Shastri and Rahul Dravid not in contention for role of head coach

Ever since the role of England's head coach was opened up there were plenty of rumours regarding Rahul Dravid and Ravi Shastri being contenders for that role. However, latest reports from Times of India states that former India head coaches Ravi Shastri and Rahul Dravid are not in contention for the role. While both highly respected figures were briefly linked with the vacancy, neither are part of the ECB's current recruitment process.

England are set to take on Pakistan in August and the ECB will be keen to get in a head coach before that series. McCullum finished his tenure as England's Test coach with a record of 27 wins, two draws and 20 defeats. He was sacked after a 2-1 defeat against New Zealand recently. Ben Stokes also announced his retirement and it remains to be seen who becomes the next England captain. Harry Brook is the leading contender to take over the captaincy of the England Test side.
