The Kolkata Knight Riders entered the IPL 2026 auction with a clear strategy—build a fearsome bowling attack capable of dominating across conditions. On paper, they executed that plan to perfection. With names like Mustafizur Rahman, Harshit Rana, Matheesha Pathirana, and Akash Deep, KKR looked like a team ready to dominate oppositions with pace, variation, and depth.
However, just days before the tournament, that dream bowling unit has completely fallen apart.
No Harshit Rana and Akash Deep in IPL 2026
The first major setback came with Mustafizur Rahman, who is currently unavailable due to geopolitical tensions, making him unable to travel to India. Known for his cutters and death-over mastery, his absence leaves a massive void in the bowling lineup. Soon after, Harshit Rana was ruled out due to injury, further weakening the Indian pace core that KKR had banked on.
As if things weren’t already spiraling, Akash Deep was also ruled out of the IPL, removing yet another reliable seam option. To add to their woes, Matheesha Pathirana—one of the most exciting T20 bowlers in world cricket—will only be available from the first week of April. That means KKR will have to navigate the crucial early phase of the tournament without one of their strike bowlers.
From having a four-pronged pace attack, KKR are now left scrambling for options.
Currently, the responsibility falls on Vaibhav Arora, who has shown glimpses of promise but lacks consistent match-winning performances at the highest level. Alongside him is Umran Malik, whose raw pace is undeniable but whose control and economy remain a concern in T20 cricket.
KKR have brought in Blessing Muzarabani as a replacement for Mustafizur. While Muzarabani offers bounce and pace, adapting quickly to IPL conditions and delivering under pressure will be a significant challenge. Kartik Tyagi is another option, but injuries and inconsistent form have limited his impact in recent seasons.
What was once KKR’s biggest strength is now their biggest concern.
Bowling wins you matches in the IPL, especially in crunch situations. With an inexperienced and unsettled attack, KKR’s campaign could suffer early setbacks. Their batters might be forced to compensate by consistently posting big totals, adding pressure on the entire team unit.
The franchise will now hope for quick recoveries, early form from their available bowlers, and a smooth integration of Pathirana once he joins. But as things stand, the road ahead looks challenging.
