Critical decision making. At the end of the day, that is what life is about, isn’t it? One correct decision, perhaps you may agree, can go a long way to define the ultimate or long term fate or outcome of any decision and the unit or team it is meant for. Don’t you think?
The same, it must be said, was something that the cricket fan felt recently upon coming across a Tweet posted on X by Lalit K Modi in the context of former Royal Challengers Bengaluru owner, Vijay Mallya.
So what was the context and what does one know?
Lalit Modi, widely known as the man behind the creation of the IPL, has stirred conversation on social media with a recent tweet about Virat Kohli and the 2008 draft. In his tweet, Modi tagged Vijay Mallya and called Kohli a “lucky pick” for Royal Challengers Bengaluru. He pointed out that Delhi had the first choice in the draft but surprised everyone by selecting Pradeep Sangwan instead of Kohli, who had just led India to the U-19 World Cup title days earlier.
Modi highlighted how things changed because of that one decision.
Since Delhi passed on Kohli, RCB got him as their pick—and the rest, as they say, is history. Kohli went on to become one of the biggest names in world cricket and the face of RCB for years.
The tweet also raised an interesting question—what if Delhi had picked Kohli? Would it have changed the future of the franchise?
Could Delhi have built their team around him and seen more success?
Fans online have quickly joined the debate, with many calling it one of the biggest “what if” moments in IPL history.
While Delhi moved in a different direction, RCB clearly benefited from that call, getting a player who would go on to define their identity.
Sometimes, one decision can change everything and Lalit Modi’s tweet, for sure, is a reminder of just that.
