The third ODI match between India and England on July 19 at the iconic Lord’s, could be Rohit Sharma’s last game in the format. As per reports from Indian Express, the BCCI’s senior selection committee have informed him that they have decided to move on from him post the series. The Indian selection committee is learnt to have spoken to Rohit Sharma alongside head coach Gautam Gambhir last week and have laid down their plans going forward.

The selection committee wants to give a chance to players like Yashasvi Jaiswal, who has been waiting in the wings, and it’s clear that the selection committee is not looking at Rohit Sharma in the role for the 2027 50-over World Cup.

A source from the board said, “Selectors have informed Rohit he is not in their scheme of things post the England tour and they are moving on from him after this series. Though he wanted to continue, especially after working on his fitness. The selectors have left the ball in Rohit Sharma’s court to decide his future”. It is also reported that Rohit Sharma spoke to a few BCCI officials too on the sidelines of the England series, and the former Indian captain wasn’t happy with the decision

Rohit Sharma struggles against England in ODI series

Rohit Sharma has struggled in the One Day Series against England having scored 11 in the first match and then 26 runs off 47 balls in the second ODI match. The former skipper’s old touch was missing during the series against England in Cardiff, and he was finding it tough to get bat on ball. There was a lot of criticism regarding his recent form with many people on social media. If the upcoming third and final ODI would be his last in this format, it would bring an end to what has been a remarkable international career for Rohit.

Notably, Sharma retired from the T20I format after the 2024 victory and also drew curtains on his Test career last year. He has been the backbone of the Indian ODI team and one of the most successful openers in this format.

However his recent form has been a concern and the selectors do not want to carry him with the 2027 World Cup scheduled next year. Yashasvi Jaiswal has scored two centuries in his previous three ODI matches and that has also played a role in selectors moving away from Rohit in this format.
