There are setbacks. There are big setbacks. And then there are huge upsets that do wreak havoc on the mindset of a cricketing unit whilst invariably becoming a positive for that same unit’s opponents or rivals. The same, it could be said, has happened with the Sri Lankan team most recently. And it’s a big blow of sorts that will perhaps affect the mental make up the side ahead of the big Super 8 stage of the ongoing and interesting T20 World Cup. So let’s look closely as to what is affecting Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka have suffered a massive setback ahead of the Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup 2026, with both Wanindu Hasaranga and Matheesha Pathirana ruled out of the tournament due to injuries. The absence of two of their most impactful match-winners has dealt a serious blow to the team’s balance at a crucial juncture.

Hasaranga, Sri Lanka’s premier all-rounder and a key figure in their T20 setup, has been instrumental with both bat and ball in recent years. His leg-spin not only provides control in the middle overs but also brings wicket-taking ability, while his aggressive lower-order batting often changes the momentum of games. Losing him deprives Sri Lanka of experience, leadership, and a genuine game-changer. Pathirana’s unavailability compounds the problem. Known for his slingy action and pinpoint yorkers at the death, the young pacer has become Sri Lanka’s go-to option in high-pressure overs. His ability to contain runs and pick up late wickets made him a vital asset in the shortest format. With the Super 8 stage demanding consistency against top sides, Sri Lanka will now need to reshuffle their combination and rely on bench strength. How they adapt to these twin setbacks could well define their campaign from here on.
At this point in time, where teams are stitching closer focus and sticking together as a formidable group with crucial games up ahead, Sri Lanka, on the other hand, are suffering and it remains to be seen what can they do to bounce back the big key absences of two of their impressive talents.
