All the build up which formed before the start of an all important clash between the Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders, has suddenly been hit by two more injury concerns. This might change the context of the game. This problem will certainly test the bench strength of Mumbai Indians, who will replace the overseas stars. They certainly will have some big-shoes to fill.
Mumbai Indians begin their IPL 2026 campaign without Mitchell Santner and Will Jacks. Both players missed the mandatory pre-match practice session against Kolkata Knight Riders at Wankhede which signalled their absence. However, the franchise confirmed that both of them requested a break and will catch up with the squad in the upcoming matches.
Which two players can replace the all-rounder duo?
The concern in bowling the middle overs in which Santner offers control with pin-point accuracy. He led New Zealand into the recently concluded T20 world cup final and then also against South Africa in a 5-match T20 series, after which he needed a breather as confirmed by the Mumbai Indians camp. On the other hand, Will Jacks gives aggressive finishing with the bat and decent control of spin in bowling. He was England’s stand-out performer in the T20 World Cup.
The team does have some good back-up options nonetheless. Afghanistan’s young spinner Allah Ghazanfar is in line to fill Santner’s role. He might be inexperienced but can do well against the quality line-up of KKR. Sherfane Rutherford, the West Indian southpaw can replace Jacks which will provide good left-right batting combinations in the batting order.
Thus, MI does have the answers against the challenge of Kolkata Knight Riders. The opening match becomes not just a season start, but a game where the onus will be on the experienced campaigners as well as the new faces who join the team against KKR.
