A decade-old social media post from former Indian captain MS Dhoni has resurfaced and gone viral after Argentina booked their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final with a 2-1 victory over England. The defending champions will now take on Spain in the Final of the World Cup at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, United States, on Monday, July 20.
After Argentina's win, fans began sharing an Instagram post Dhoni uploaded during India's tour of Zimbabwe in June 2016. The image showed the former India captain playing PlayStation with Mandeep Singh, Jaydev Unadkat, Axar Patel and Karun Nair.
What caught everyone's attention was his caption on the post, which read, "Spain vs Argentina." After Argentina made it to the final, fans began reposting the original post, and it gained plenty of comments.
Dhoni was captain of the side and was on a tour to Zimbabwe at the time. His post from almost a decade ago has now turned into reality, making it a remarkable coincidence.
The former India captain has, in the past, said that he follows a lot of football, and even his former teammate Sam Billings had said that Dhoni was a Manchester United fan. The post caught everyone's attention almost ten years later.
MS Dhoni Spotted at India vs England 1st ODI in Birmingham
Former Indian captain MS Dhoni was also spotted watching the first ODI between India and England at Birmingham live from the stadium. His pictures went viral, and fans started reminiscing about the moments. There were also plenty of posts on social media putting Dhoni, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma in the same frame. He had led the Indian side and helped the likes of Kohli and others. They have shared a great bond, and after the former captain was spotted at the first ODI, the video went viral on social media.
India won the opening match quite comprehensively on the back of an all-round performance from Axar Patel. They have taken a 1-0 lead in the series, and the action will shift to Cardiff for the second match. It will be interesting to see if Dhoni attends the second match of the series.
Meanwhile, Argentina came back from one goal behind to beat England and reach the final. It was heartbreaking for England, who held the lead until the 84th minute. The final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be played on Sunday.
