On this day, February 23, 2014: South Africa level Test series against Australia after 231 run victory. South Africa were batting first in the second Test and lost two wickets quickly as they were 11/2. Dean Elgar and Faf Du Plessis stitched up a big partnership as both players completed their half centuries. Australia managed to dismiss both of them but in came AB De Villiers and along with JP Duminy put up another big partnership. AB De Villiers scored 116 which included 14 fours and a six while JP Duminy smashed 123 as South Africa put up big runs on the board. South Africa managed to score 423 before getting bowled out and it was a very good score in the first innings.

Nathan Lyon picked up five wickets as Australia wrapped up things. In the second innings, Australia were rocked early by the South African pacers as they lost three quick wickets for 41. David Warner played really well as he scored a half century but no other batter could support him. Steve Smith was the only other batter to do well scoring 49 as Australia were bowled out for 246 and conceded a huge lead. Morkel and Philander scalped three wickets each as South Africa were right on top.

South Africa had plenty of time and they built on that lead as Hashim Amla scored 127 and the rest of the batters chipped in. South Africa scored 270/5 before the declaration came in and they set Australia a massive total to chase. Johnson and Siddle picked up two wickets each but it was a huge task for Australia in the fourth innings chase as they were set a target of 448.

Australia started really well in the chase as they put up a 126 run opening partnership. The surface was looking good enough for batting and suddenly it looked like Australia would chase it down. But Dale Steyn had other ideas as he got the ball to reverse and made life difficult for the Australian batters. Dale Steyn picked up four wickets in quick time as Australia were bowled out for 216 and South Africa managed to level the series 1-1. Steyn triggered the collapse as Australia went from 126/0 to 216 all out.
